LatexNotes vs Underleaf
An Underleaf alternative for handwritten maths, compared plan by plan. Checked on 18 October 2026.
Underleaf is an AI toolkit for academic LaTeX: it converts notes, PDFs, images, tables, Excel and Word files to LaTeX, and adds TikZ, citation and writing tools. LatexNotes does one job in depth: it turns handwritten maths notes into compilable LaTeX and a typeset PDF, whole pages at a time, from a photo or PDF or from writing on an iPad. Here is how they compare, using the numbers each site lists.

Where Underleaf may suit you better
- You convert many kinds of files, not only handwriting: tables, Excel sheets and Word documents to LaTeX, or LaTeX back to Word.
- You want AI writing help in the same place, such as drafting an abstract or a summary, and looking up citations as BibTeX.
- You are buying for a group of 5 or more and want central billing and invoices for university reimbursement.
Where LatexNotes fits better
- Long handwritten notes: a Pro upload takes up to 100 pages and Pro has no monthly page limit, so a whole set of lecture notes goes in at once.
- Writing on an iPad: write in LatexNotes' own notebooks with an Apple Pencil, on plain, dotted, squared or Cornell paper. Writing is free; turning a notebook into LaTeX is part of Pro.
- Graphs, not screenshots: hand-drawn plots come back as editable TikZ and pgfplots you can adjust.
- A finished document: every page is compiled into a typeset PDF. Edit the LaTeX in the browser and recompile, download the .tex, or open it in Overleaf.
- Price: Pro is £3.99 a month or £34.99 a year, and every new account gets 14 days of Pro free, with no card.
Try both on the same page
The fairest test is one of your own pages run through both. LatexNotes converts your first 5 pages with no account. For more on how it works, see handwriting to LaTeX, GoodNotes to LaTeX and how it compares as a Mathpix alternative.
