What you need for each grade
Enter your current grade and the final's weight to fill in this table.
What if?
Enter your current grade and the final's weight above first.
How it works
- Enter two numbers. Your grade before the final, and how much the final counts, both as percentages.
- Set your target. Add the overall grade you want: the score you need on the final appears, and the table shows it for every letter grade.
- Try a score. Type a score under What if? to see the overall grade it would give you.
The formula
The score you need on the final is:
And the overall grade a given score on the final gives you is:
- is your grade before the final and the final's weight as a fraction (30% is 0.3).
- is the overall grade you want and the score you need on the final.
- is a score on the final and the overall grade it gives.
Worked example
Say your grade before the final is 84% and the final counts for 30%, so . For a B (80%) overall you need:
For an A (90%) you would need:
That is more than 100%, so an A is out of reach. Full marks on the final would give:
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out what I need on my final?
Take the overall grade you want, subtract the part of your grade that is already fixed (your current grade times the share of the course that is not the final), then divide by the final's weight. For example, with 84% so far and a final worth 30%, finishing on 80% needs about 70.7% on the final.
What if I need more than 100%?
Then that grade cannot be reached through the final alone: even full marks leave you short. The calculator shows the highest overall grade you can still get. Ask your teacher whether extra credit, other coursework or a retake could still count.
What does it mean if I need 0% or less?
You have already secured that grade: even a 0 on the final leaves you at or above it. Check your course rules before skipping it, as some courses require you to sit the final, or pass it, to pass the course.
Where do I find my current grade and the final's weight?
Your syllabus or course handbook usually says how much the final counts, and your online gradebook usually shows your current grade. Use your grade before the final, worked out from everything marked so far.
Can I use points instead of percentages?
Yes, by turning them into percentages first. Your current grade is the points you have earned divided by the points possible so far, times 100. The final's weight is the final's points divided by the course's total points, times 100.
What if more than the final is still to come?
This calculator treats everything left as one final exam. If several pieces of work are still to be marked, use the weighted grade calculator: list what you have, give the rest their weights, and it works out the average you need on all of it.
Is it free, and is what I type saved?
It is free and needs no account. The sums are done on this page, in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to us or saved.
