Weighted Grade Calculator
Type each grade as a percentage (86) or as points out of the total (43/50). Leave the grade empty for work still to come.
Enter a grade and a weight for each item. Your weighted grade appears here as you type.
What do I need on the rest?
Left empty, it uses 100%: the part of the course with no grade yet.
Enter the grade you want overall to see the average you need on the rest.
How it works
- List your work. For each assignment or category, enter its grade, as a percentage or as points such as 43/50, and its weight.
- Read your weighted grade. Each grade is multiplied by its weight and the total is divided by the sum of the weights, so the result is right even when the weights do not add up to 100.
- Plan the rest. Leave the grade empty for work still to come, then enter the grade you want overall to see the average you need on the rest.
The formula
Your weighted grade is each grade times its weight, added up and divided by the sum of the weights:
And the average you need on the work still to come is:
- is the grade of item as a percentage (for points, earned divided by possible, times 100) and is its weight.
- is the weights marked so far, added up, and the weight still to come.
- is the grade you want overall and the average you need on the rest.
Worked example
A course with three marks in and the final exam still to come:
| Item or category | Grade | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Homework | 92% | 20% |
| Quizzes | 43/50 = 86% | 20% |
| Midterm | 78% | 25% |
| Final exam | still to come | 35% |
The weights marked so far add up to 65%, so this is the grade on that 65%. To finish with 85%, the final exam (the other 35%) needs:
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total of the weights. When the weights add up to 100, that last step is just dividing by 100. A test worth 40% therefore moves your grade four times as much as a quiz worth 10%.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
Usually it means part of the course has not been marked yet. Dividing by the weights you have gives your grade on the work marked so far, which is what the calculator shows, and it tells you what your weights add up to. If they add up to more than 100%, check them against your syllabus.
Can I enter points instead of percentages?
Yes. Type the points as earned out of possible, for example 43/50, and the calculator turns them into a percentage (86%). You can mix points and percentages in the same list.
How do I handle a category with many assignments?
Enter the whole category as one row: its average as a percentage, or its total points such as 172/200, with the category's weight. Everything in a category shares that weight, so one homework in a category of ten counts for far less than the category as a whole.
How do I work out what I need on the rest of the course?
List the work still to come with its weight and no grade, or type the weight still to come into the box under the result, then enter the grade you want overall. The calculator shows the average you need on the remaining work, or tells you if the target is out of reach or already secured.
Is a weighted grade the same as a weighted GPA?
No. A weighted grade combines the parts of one course by their weights. A weighted GPA averages grade points across all your courses on the 4.0 scale, with a bonus for Honors, AP or IB courses. Use the GPA calculator for that.
Is it free, and is what I type saved?
It is free and needs no account. The sums are done on this page, in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to us or saved.
